THE HURRICANE

Fannie’s neighbourhood was  destroyed by a hurricane. If Fannie had known about the dangers, she would have left the city. If the government had warned the citizens, then many people wouldn’t have been trapped in their houses by floodwaters. If the government had listened to the warnings of environmentalists, the city could have taken more precautions. If there had been better planning, the damage wouldn’t have been so severe. If Fannie had been warned she could have gathered emergency supplies of food and water. If the government had provided buses and transportation then everyone could have evacuated the area.

Conditional Sentences Type 1

Conditional Sentences Type 1 adalah conditional yang digunakan ketika result/consequence (hasil) dari condition (syarat) memiliki kemungkinan untuk terwujud dimasa depan karena condition-nya realistic untuk dipenuhi. Dalam Konteks type 1 ini, kita akan berbicara mengenai masa depan. Membicarakan pengandaian masa depan memang sering dilakukan.

Beberapa contoh conditional sentences type 1

1.      Struktur : if + simple present tense + subject + will + verb

Jika	Kondisi	Hasil
	present simple	Will + base verb
if	I see Tyas	I will call him
if	it rains tommorow	will you stay in my house ?
if	Tyas not sick tommorow	I will invite her to my birthday party

           

2.      Struktur : will + base verb + if + simple present tense

Conditional Sentences Type 2

               Second Conditional sentences adalah  conditional sentence yang digunakan ketika result/consequence (hasil) dari condition (syarat) tidak memiliki atau hanya sedikit kemungkinan untuk terwujud karena condition-nya tidak mungkin dipenuhi dimasa sekarang (present unreal situation) atau condition-nya sulit untuk dipenuhi di masa depan (unlikely to happen).

               Conditional sentence type 2 digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa yang tidak mungkin terjadi karena syaratnya tidak mungkin terpenuhi. Kalimat ini digunakan untuk membicarakan fakta yang bertolak belakang dengan masa sekarang.

RUMUS = If + past tense, would + verb I

Contoh:

1.      If I were you, I would be very angry. (Jika saya menjadi kamu, saya akan sangat marah.)

            Fact: I’m not you, so I’m not very angry. (Saya bukan kamu, sehingga saya tidak sangat marah.)

2.      If I were Superman, I would fly to the Moon.(Jika saya menjadi Superman, saya akan terbang ke Bulan.)

            Fact: I’m not Superman, so I don’t fly to the Moon. (Saya bukan Superman, sehingga saya tidak terbang ke Bulan.)

3.      If I married Anna, I would be very happy. (Jika saya menikahi Anna, saya akan sangat senang.)

            Fact: I don’t marry Anna, so I’m not very happy. (Saya tidak menikahi Anna, sehingga saya tidak sangat senang.)

Conditional sentences type 3

               Conditional sentence type 3 atau third conditional adalah conditional sentence yang digunakan ketika result/consequence (hasil) dari condition (syarat) tidak ada kemungkinan terwujud karena condition-nya harus sudah dipenuhi di masa lalu.

RUMUS = if + condition, result/consequence

Contoh kalimat :

1.      If you had remembered to invite me, I would have attended your party ( Jika kamu ingat mengundang saya, saya akan hadir dipestamu )

2.      If I had given the interviewer really good answer, I might have got a higher position than you ( Jika saya member jawaban yang benar- benar bagus ke pewawancara, saya mungkin mendapatkan posisi yang lebih tinggi dari kamu)

Passive voice The Legend of Mt. Slamet and Ki Semar

The Legend of Slamet and Ki Semar

           

            A long time ago, Slamet Mountain was very high. It was so high that it could reach the sky. People heard that they could take the stars if they were on top of the mountain. But no one dared to go there.

The people were afraid that the gods in heaven would be angry if people took the stars. However, the beauty of the stars made some monkeys dared to go to the top of the mountain. Led by their king, they went there and took some stars. Then, the sky became dark at night. People were sad and the gods were angry!

Batara Guru was the leader of the gods. He held a meeting. He invited Batara Narada, Batara Brama, Batara Bayu, and others. Batara Narada had an idea how to stop the monkeys. They would ask Ki Semar to help them.

Ki Semar was actually one of the gods. He was even older than Batara Guru. But Ki Semar did not live in heaven. He lived on earth with his children, Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong. Ki Semar had a great supernatural power. He could cut the top of the mountain easily. But first, he wanted to give a lesson to the naughty monkeys. They had to be punished for stealing the stars. He then set a plan with his children to trap the monkeys.

Gareng then went to the top of the mountain. He had to attract the monkeys to go down by giving them some bananas. It worked! The monkeys followed Gareng.

After the monkeys left the top of the mountain, Ki Semar immediately cut the top of the mountain. He threw the biggest part to Cirebon. It became Ceremai Mountain and the small parts became small mountains, like Clirit Mountain, Tapak Mountain, and others.

After the monkeys left the mountain and followed Gareng, Petruk was ready with some hot water. He planned to pour the hot water over the monkeys. He waited and waited but the monkeys never came to him. He did not know that while the monkeys chased Gareng, they met a giant dragon. The monkeys will fight with the dragon. It was so terrible that both the monkeys and the dragon finally died.

Because of tired waiting for the monkeys, Petruk then left the place. He did not bring his hot water and left it there. People then named the place where Petruk left his hot water as Guci. It is about 50 kilometers from Tegal, Central Java. It is famous for its hot water.
